INS SALESIAN BROTHERS GATHERING FOCUSES ON HOPE, LEGAL AWARENESS, AND CULTURAL APPRECIATION

Shillong, 17th March – The Salesian Brothers of the St John Paul II, Shillong Province organized a two-day gathering that brought together brothers and key speakers to discuss themes of hope, legal awareness, and cultural appreciation on the 15th and 16th March 2025. The event, held at Don Bosco Technical School commenced on Saturday evening with an inaugural session led by Fr. Jeevan Lakra sdb, the Vice Provincial who emphasized the dual dimension of the Salesian congregation, integrating both lay religious brothers and clerics. His address set the tone for the event, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in the mission of the Salesians.
The brothers gathered to discuss hope, legal awareness, cultural appreciation, and vocations.

Following the inauguration, Advocate Fr. G. Owen, a Jesuit priest and High Court practitioner, conducted an insightful session on legal matters. In his session title ‘Legal Matters Related to Labour, Youth, and Children,’ he outlined key legal frameworks essential for Salesian institutions, including service rules, gender policy, and child safeguarding policies. He stressed the need for every institution to have these legal structures in place to ensure accountability and protection.

The next session featured Fr. Arul Kumar Sebastien, a canonist Professor from Sacred Heart Theological College, who provided an update on recent developments in canon law concerning religious life. He spoke about the increased role of laypeople in clerical work, the leadership opportunities now available to religious brothers, and the progressive steps taken by congregations such as the Holy Cross Brothers in leadership roles.

Br. Abraham concluded the evening with a heartfelt reflection, reinforcing the resilience of Salesian brothers who often navigate challenges within their congregation, community, and even their own families. His message underscored the power of personal prayer and perseverance in sustaining their vocation.

The following day, the event resumed with a Eucharistic celebration led by the Vice Provincial. The morning session was dedicated to personal sharing among the brothers, themed “Anchored in Hope.” Participants reflected on their experiences in their respective missions, sharing how they inspire and support young people despite various challenges.

Fr. Barnes Mawrie then led a session on youth ministry in the cultural context, emphasizing the importance of valuing and preserving indigenous traditions while integrating them into pastoral work. He raised concerns about the erosion of cultural identity among younger generations and urged the Salesians to actively revive and uphold these traditions within their ministry. He highlighted the alignment between gospel values and tribal values, advocating for a harmonious approach that respects local cultures while promoting Christian teachings.

The event concluded with a discussion on the way forward, where the brothers assessed their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A key resolution was the formation of a dedicated team to promote Salesian vocations across formation houses and parishes, with a specific focus on the role of Salesian brothers. Additionally, participants agreed to collaborate with neighboring provinces for future gatherings and retreats to foster greater unity and participation.

Despite the smaller turnout of 17 participants from the province, the gathering was marked by meaningful discussions, strategic planning, and a renewed commitment to their mission. The event ended with a communal lunch, leaving the participants motivated and equipped to continue their ministry with renewed dedication.
