Thenzawl is a census town in Serchhip district of Mizoram. It is located at 90 km away from Aizawl. In 2009 the Provincial and Economer of Guwahati Province requested Fr. Giles Thyrniang to scout around Thenzawl area and find the possibility of getting somesuitable land to start some Salesian work in that area. Sr. Rose Paithe MSMHC, who was in Durtlang, helped Fr. Giles. The V.C.P. of Vengthar was very cooperative and offered some land free of any cost. But the land offered was too far away from the main village. With more efforts on the part of Fr.Giles and Sr. Rose, a good piece of land, not too far away from the village and the main road was spotted. After a period of negotiations, in 2010 and 2011, the present plot land was purchased from three owners. The extent of the land was about 25 acres. As were still under the undivided Province of Guwahati, the Guwahati Province paid for the land.
Later, Fr. Giles and Bro. Mathew Vazhamplakal (VS) were posted in Thenzawl, and they were placed under Don Bosco, Lawngtlai community. They took a house on rent, not too far away from the newly purchased land. They started to stay in the rented house on 5th May 2012. Later on, Fr. Bosco Minj joined the new community.
Discussions were held periodically by the confreres working in Mizoram to decide as to what type of apostolate we could initiate in Thenzawl. Many proposals were made as to the type of work we could start. The Bishop of Aizawl wanted us start a College; some spoke of a school, others proposed that we start technical or agricultural training. But no conclusion was reached.
After the formation of the new Province of Silchar (INS), the new Provincial, Rev. Fr. George Maliekal, showed interest in revamping the Salesian apostolate in Mizoram. It was decided to utilize the land in Thenzawl and to begin with a school there. In this connection the Provincial requested the help of Fr. Anthony Valluran to look after the construction works. Fr. Anthony obliged the request and readily accepted to look after the construction works at Thenzawl.Fr. Giles Thyrniang, Fr. Bosco Minj and Br VS Mathew were transferred from Thenzawl.
On 18th November 2013 the foundation stone was blessed by Rev.Fr. George Maliekal, the Provincial, in the presence of all Salesians from Saiha, Lawngtlai and Seling, Fr. Balthazar, the Parish Priest of Serchhip (Thenzawl falls under the jurisdiction of Serchhip Parish), the local authorities and heads of various NGOs and some well wishers. All present expressed their joy at the idea of starting a Don Bosco School in Thenzawl. They promised their full cooperation and support towards this initiative.
In April 2015 the new Don Bosco School at Thenzawl was opened (in the building under construction – ground floor was used as class rooms), from KG I to Class IV. In the first year 220 students were enrolled. There were 9 members in the first batch of Teachers. In May 2015 Bro. Anthony Ngunkung joined Fr. Anthony Valluran at Thenzawl. They both stayed in a rented house. In November 2015, Mr. Finbarr Buckley, an Irish well wisher friend of Fr. Anthony, joined the staff.
The Confreres transferred their residence to the newly built rooms of the School in September 2016.
