Blessing of the New Church and Silver Jubilee Celebrations in Lawngtlai

Shillong / Lawngtlai, May 2, 2025 – In a moment of profound grace and thanksgiving, the newly constructed parish church in Lawngtlai was consecrated to the Lord in a solemn rite of blessing presided over by His Excellency, the Most Rev. Stephen Rotluanga, Bishop of Aizawl. The sacred ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering of shepherds and consecrated souls, including Rev. Fr. John Zosiama, SDB, Provincial of Shillong; Rev. Fr. Joseph Lalbiakthanga, Vicar General of the Diocese of Aizawl; members of the Provincial Council; and a host of priests and religious from the Dioceses of Aizawl, Shillong, Silchar, and Tripura. The presence of Sr. Maria Goretti Sangma, MSMHC, Provincial of Shillong, further adorned the occasion with the witness of religious life.

The day commenced with a magnificent act of welcome, as a reverent procession, accompanied by the uplifting melodies of the Don Bosco School brass band, escorted the bishop, clergy, and religious to the church gates in a gesture of filial devotion. In honor of the parish’s Silver Jubilee, twenty-five chosen faithful—including the bishop, priests, religious, and lay leaders—struck the traditional darkhuang drum, symbolizing the joyful proclamation of Christ’s victory. Two memorial stones—one commemorating the dedication of the new House of God and the other marking the Silver Jubilee—were unveiled by His Excellency Bishop Stephen and Rev. Fr. John Zosiama, respectively, as enduring testaments to Divine Providence.

Following the solemn rite of the opening of the church doors and the blessing of the sacred edifice, a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered with great reverence. In his homily, Bishop Stephen extolled the tireless apostolic labors of the Salesian missionaries in Lawngtlai and the southern regions of Mizoram, acknowledging their fidelity to the Church’s evangelizing mission. He exhorted the faithful to render ceaseless gratitude to the Almighty for the gift of the new church and to persevere in their communal efforts ad maiorem Dei gloriam—for the greater glory of God and the building up of His Holy Church.

The liturgical celebration was further elevated by the celestial harmonies of the Aizawl Diocese Choir, which offered a jubilee hymn and a centenary anthem in honor of a century of Catholic witness in Mizoram. In a beautiful gesture of Christian fraternity, a choir from the Baptist Church of Mizoram also raised their voices in praise, as leaders of various Christian denominations joined in a spirit of ecumenical communion.

After the Mass, a felicitation program was held in the parish hall, followed by a shared agape meal, fostering bonds of charity among all present. This historic occasion stood as a radiant testament to the fruits of grace sown by the Holy Spirit through the collaborative zeal of the clergy, religious, catechists, and lay faithful—united as one body in Christ. Deo gratias!
