Shillong, 31st July 2026: Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, organized a day-long programme on 31st July 2026 focusing on Artificial Intelligence, critical thinking, communication, and student empowerment. The programme consisted of an “Empowering Students Through AI” Workshop in the morning, followed by the Inter-Department Debate Competition 2026 in the afternoon.
The morning session, “Empowering Students Through AI,” was conducted with Br. Sniawshngain Papang, Vice Principal, DBTS Shillong, as the Resource Person. The workshop introduced students to the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence in education, technical training, creativity, research, productivity, and the future workplace.
The session highlighted the practical ways in which AI can support students in their learning and skill development. At the same time, students were encouraged to use AI responsibly and ethically, with emphasis on maintaining human creativity, critical thinking, independent learning, practical skills, and sound judgement. The interactive session helped students understand both the opportunities and challenges associated with the growing use of AI.
The afternoon session featured the Inter-Department Debate Competition 2026 on the topic: “Does AI Empower Students or Weaken Them?”
The debate provided students with an opportunity to express their views and develop public speaking, logical reasoning, critical thinking, confidence, and communication skills. Participants presented arguments both in favour of AI as a tool for learning and empowerment and against its possible negative effects, such as overdependence, reduced critical thinking, lack of originality, and weakening of independent problem-solving abilities.
The MMV Department emerged as the Overall Winner. Hamebankmen Kharjana (MMV) was adjudged Best Speaker, while Jonathan H. (GDA) was named Best Debater for the Motion, followed by Lumthaipou Phaomei (Carpentry) as 1st Runner-Up. Joysil Amsong (MMV) was awarded Best Debater Against the Motion, with Ikdewlynti Myrthong (MMV) securing 1st Runner-Up.
The programme successfully combined technology awareness with critical reflection, encouraging students not only to understand AI but also to question, evaluate, and use it responsibly. The day served as a valuable platform for developing students’ digital readiness, creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.
