SPORTS MINISTER WAILADMIKI SHYLLA INAUGURATES NEW FUTSAL GROUND AT ST. ANTHONY’S HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, SHILLONG

Shillong, November 3, 2025 — In a celebration of youth, sports, and holistic education, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, Shri Wailadmiki Shylla, inaugurated the newly constructed futsal ground and football gallery at St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong. The event witnessed the presence of the Principal, Fr. Anthony Kharkongor SDB, the Vice Principal, Fr. Aibor Nongsiej SDB, members of the staff, and a vibrant gathering of students.

The programme began with a prayer service and songs led by the students of Class 12 Commerce, invoking God’s blessing on the new facility and all who will benefit from it. In his keynote address, Bah Wailadmiki Shylla, himself a former basketball player who once represented Meghalaya, congratulated the school for its commitment to nurturing both mind and body. “Not everyone can become a doctor or an engineer,” he said. “Each young person carries unique talents. The government is working to create platforms where these talents can flourish through sports and skill development.” As he promised collaboration with the school to promote sports and all round formation of the students.

He further inspired the students by sharing his personal journey — from humble beginnings as a student-athlete to becoming a cabinet minister — underscoring the values of discipline, perseverance, and vision in achieving one’s goals.

In his welcome speech and echoing the Salesian educational philosophy, Fr. Anthony Kharkongor expressed gratitude to the Minister and the government for their support, highlighting that the futsal ground is not merely a sports arena but “a playground of growth, friendship, and moral formation.”

The Salesians of Don Bosco have long recognised the transformative power of sports in youth formation, following the legacy of St. John Bosco, who once said, “Run, jump, play, but do not sin.”

Following the inauguration, medals were distributed to students who excelled in various competitions held at True North Lapalang, recognising their sportsmanship and determination. The event concluded on a joyful note with musical performances by the school band, symbolising the harmony between education, faith, and youthful enthusiasm — the true spirit of Don Bosco’s preventive system.
