Shillong 24th August 2026: The Northeast Zone Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) Leaders and Animators Formation (LAF) 2026 was held from 21st to 23rd August 2026 at Siloam, Umsawkhwan, Meghalaya, under the theme “Arise! Be Light. Be Hope. Be Don Bosco’s Youth!” The programme brought together 81 young representatives from the Salesian Provinces of Dimapur (IND), Guwahati (ING) and Shillong (INS), accompanied by the Youth Ministry Delegates and SYM coordinators.
The programme was inaugurated on 21st August at 6:30 p.m. with the formal welcome and felicitation of the delegates and participants. Fr. Lendakadavil Anthony, Assistant Director of Siloam, gave a brief introduction to Siloam, while Fr. Anthony Kharkongor delivered an inspiring message on servant leadership. He reminded the young people that leadership begins in everyday life through helping others, listening, taking responsibility, and above all, leading by example.
The following days focused on Salesian formation, leadership, spirituality and animation. The Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Fr. Jeevan K. Lakra, Vice Provincial of Shillong, highlighted leadership through service, drawing inspiration from the example of Our Blessed Mother. The major formation sessions included “Identity, Vision and Mission of SYM” by Sir Vancouver Shullai; “Don Bosco as Father, Teacher and Friend of the Young” by Bro. Quirinus; “Salesian Youth and New Media Today” by Fr. Bivan R Mukhim; “The Preventive System – Reason, Religion and Loving-Kindness” by Fr. Theotimus; and “Salesian Youth Spirituality” by Fr. Ritonbor. Fr. Cletus encouraged the participants to become leaders who think critically, accept constructive criticism and accept themselves.
The participants were divided into eight groups and actively engaged in discussions, games, presentations and family gatherings, strengthening their skills in teamwork, communication, creativity, leadership and fraternity. A special spiritual experience was the prayerful walk through the Bible Valley, introduced by Fr. George Palamattathil, Director of Siloam. The experience provided the young people with a meaningful moment of prayer, reflection and encounter with the Word of God.
The programme also strengthened the bonds of unity and fraternity among the three Northeast Provinces, encouraging the young people to take an active role in the Church, community and society as responsible Salesian leaders.
A special word of gratitude was expressed to the Fathers and entire staff of Siloam for their warm hospitality, excellent accommodation, meals, logistical support and generous service, which contributed greatly to the smooth and successful running of the programme.
The LAF concluded with a renewed commitment among the young participants to lead through service, animate with enthusiasm, remain united and inspire others through their lives, carrying forward the spirit and mission of Don Bosco.
