Sacred Heart Theological College Inaugurates Khasi Language Course to Strengthen Pastoral Mission

Shillong, 7 July 2026: Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai, formally inaugurated its Khasi Language Course on 7 July 2026, marking the beginning of a valuable formation programme aimed at equipping seminarians, religious, and missionaries with the language skills necessary for effective pastoral ministry among the Khasi people.

The inaugural function, held at the college campus, began with an invocation to the Holy Spirit, the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, and a prayer, setting a prayerful tone for the new academic journey. The programme was attended by members of the college community, faculty, religious brothers and sisters enrolled in the course, and distinguished guests.

Among those present were Fr. Barnes Mawrie, Fr. Denis Lalfela, Fr. Aloysius Hemrom, Fr. A. L. Jose, Fr. Jose Chunkapura, Fr. Gervasis, Fr. Alexius Dkhar, and Fr. Timothy, the Khasi language instructor. The occasion was graced by Dr. Sylvanus Lamare, who served as the Chief Guest.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Lamare underscored the vital role of language in missionary life and pastoral ministry. He described language as far more than a tool for communication, calling it a bridge to understanding a people’s culture, history, traditions, and values. He encouraged the participants to embrace the Khasi language with commitment and enthusiasm, reminding them that learning the local language is an expression of respect, love, and closeness to the people they are called to serve.

Reflecting the spirit of the Gospel and the missionary vision of the Church, the programme highlighted that authentic evangelization begins with listening, dialogue, and genuine accompaniment. Learning the Khasi language, the speakers noted, enables future priests and religious to build meaningful relationships, communicate the Good News more effectively, and share in the lives and aspirations of the local community.

The rich cultural heritage of the Khasi people was also celebrated during the programme through a melodious Khasi song presented by Br. Aldo Kharkongor, Br. Eliphas, and Br. James Marbaniang, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the inauguration.

Later, Fr. Barnes Mawrie outlined the course structure and encouraged the participants to actively engage in the learning process, emphasizing that language acquisition requires perseverance, practice, and openness to the local culture.

The programme concluded with a thanksgiving hymn in the Khasi language and a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest, the college authorities, faculty members, and everyone who contributed to the successful organization of the event.

The inauguration of the Khasi Language Course reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to forming missionaries who are not only academically equipped but also culturally sensitive and pastorally effective. In the spirit of St. John Bosco, who believed in meeting young people within their own culture and context, the initiative seeks to prepare future pastoral workers to proclaim the Gospel with understanding, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the rich heritage of the Khasi people.
