DON BOSCO SCHOOL – SELING
(Estd. 1993 – C 2005) INS 30; Seling, Mizoram – 796161
BRIEF HISTORY
The little town of Seling, situated 40 kms distant from Aizawl served as the provident location for the second Salesian presence in Mizoram. Bishop Denzil D’Souza of Silchar granted necessary permission for a new Parish and School at Seling. The area of the new Parish was divided from the Parishes of Chingchip and Aizawl. The land was bought in 1992. Fr. Anthony Valluran, who pioneered the Saiha Mission, came to stay at Seling on 11 November 1993 in a rented house. In November 1994, Don Bosco School was started at Seling in a temporary shed with an enrolment of 60 children in KG I and KG II. The civil authorities and the local people contributed generously for the beginning of the school.
The construction of the new school building started in June 1995. By August 1997 the residence of the fathers was shifted to the partially completed structure. Fr. Luc Van Looy, the Vicar of the Rector Major visited Seling in April 1996 and Fr. Luciano Odorico, the General Councilor for the Missions visited in September 1997.
At the request of the public, three village schools were opened; at Khawruhlian and Darlawn in 1994, and at Ratu in 1995. The school at Ratu has classes up to Class X. For all three village schools the land was donated by the village councils and the financial help for the buildings was given by the Government of Mizoram. The villagers continue to provide accommodation for the teachers, who are from far-away places. The collaboration of all the Christian denominations in the well running of the village schools has brought unity among the people. Don Bosco School at Seling has classes from KG I to Class X.
In 2005 the Salesian presence at Seling was formally recognized as a Salesian community. In 2009, the Community was made up of Fr. Puthenthara James (Rector and Parish Priest), Fr. Valluran Anthony (Assistant priest and Coordinator of village schools) and Fr. Mosahary Benny (Headmaster).
