BRIEF HISTORY

St. Xavier’s School, Pathaliaghat (Tripura) was established in 1986 by Mr. Atul Debbarma, a past pupil of Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong. Mr. Atul, while studying at Don Bosco received baptism and after having completed his studies, returned to his native place and began the school for the upliftment of the people, especially catering to the educational needs of the children and of the young. In December 1991, Mr. Atul handed over the school, the hostel and the land to the Salesians. The Salesian presence at Pathaliaghat was formally recognized as a community in 1992. The School grew steadily.

The High School received Government recognition in 1995. The Higher Secondary section, which has only the arts stream at present, was recognized in 1997. Attached to the school is the Don Bosco hostel with nearly 200 boys. The School and the hostels provide educational services to the multi-ethnic groups of the region. The ethnic mosaic of the region consists of the Debbarma, Jamatia, Molsom, Reang, Kaipeng, Chakma, Halam, Hrangkhawl, Koloi, Bongcher, Garo, Bengali and several other smaller groups.

The Salesian community renders a variety of extension services to the youth and the neighborhood. They conduct coaching classes for students and provide training in spoken English. Also they organize number of vocational training programmes like typing, tailoring, pig rearing etc.

Fr. Kunnathukizhakethil Joseph, Cl. Francis Basumatary, Fr. Kizhakechennadu Joseph, Br. Aloysius Induar, and Fr. Pulinthanath Joseph, are among the confreres who pioneered the Centre and worked in the early years. In 2009, the community was made up of Fr. Choorackal V. Joseph (Rector & Principal), Fr. Tham Raphael (Vice Rector), Bro. Vazhamplackal Mathew (Administrator) and clerics in practical training.

With the arrival of the FMA Sisters in 1992, and the inauguration of Auxilium Convent the following year, other services like convent hostel for girls and health services, visiting families, touring villages and catechizing were started. Sr. Alphonsa Kurisingal served in the capacity of Headmistress of St. Xavier’s School from 1993 to 1998.
