47TH ANNUAL PROVINCIAL CONGRESS OF SALESIAN COOPERATORS HELD AT NONGSTOIÑ

Nongstoiñ, 26th October 2025: The 47th Annual Provincial Congress of the Salesian Cooperators of the Shillong Province was held on October 25th and 26th, 2025, at Nongstoiñ. This significant event marked a milestone in the spiritual and communal life of the province, coinciding with the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Association of the Salesian Cooperators by St. John Bosco.

 

 Inauguration and Opening Ceremony

The Congress was officially inaugurated with the hoisting of the flags of the Shillong Province and the Salesian Cooperators. The ceremony began with a warm welcome to all delegates. Honorable Mr. Gabriel Wahlang, MLA of Nongstoiñ Constituency, led the inauguration, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement and cooperative spirituality in fostering social development.

 

  • Keynote Inputs and Reflections

A major highlight of the Congress was the input session delivered by The Director of BIDS, Fr. James Thyrniang SDB. He reflected on “Poverty Eradication and the Role of the Salesian Cooperator,” inspiring delegates to actively participate in social justice initiatives. Following this, the South Asian FMA Delegate for Salesian Cooperators, Sr. Lugina Duia FMA offered an insightful presentation on “The Challenges of Daily Life of the Salesian Cooperator,” addressing contemporary issues faced by members and proposing strategies to overcome them.

 

  • Motivational and Spiritual Highlights

The gathering featured a “Good Night Talk” by Fr. Joseph Anikuzhikattil SDB, Provincial Delegate for the Salesian Family, who shared motivational reflections to foster unity and dedication among participants from the five regions of the province, including Tripura.

 

  • Promise Taking and The Release of the Handbook

 A deeply spiritual moment was the Holy Mass, presided over by the Salesian Provincial, Fr. John Zosiama SDB. During this Mass, 21 aspirants from the Nongstoiñ Centre took their promise of allegiance to the Salesian Cooperator fraternity in the presence of a large, vibrant congregation of Catholic faithful. Notable dignitaries present included Sr. Carmelina Sun FMA, Sr. Cristina Kharkongor FMA, and delegates from various centers of both FMA and SDB communities. At the end of the Mass the Handbook of the Association of the Salesian Cooperators was released by the main celebrant.

 

  • The Elective Congress and Leadership Renewal

The Congress concluded with the renewal of the Provincial Council. An election was held to appoint the Provincial Coordinator and her council for the term 2026-2029, ensuring continuity and dynamic leadership for the coming years. Mrs. Ireland Doonai and her team succeeded Mr. Anthony Laloo and his team for the next three years.

 Significance and Reflection

This year’s Congress not only celebrated the enduring legacy of Don Bosco but also galvanized the Salesian Cooperators to continue their dedicated service in youth work, education, social justice, spiritual nurturing, and pastoral ministry within parishes. The event reinforced the spirit of cooperation and faith, inspiring hope and renewal within the community, and aligning with the 150-year-old legacy of the Salesian Cooperators.
