BRIEF HISTORY

Mathias Institute, named after Archbishop Louis Mathias, the great leader of the first group of Salesian missionaries who came to Northeast India in 1922, was canonically erected by the Rector Major, Rev. Fr. Egidio Vigano on 6 February 1990. It was blessed on 24 May 1990 and the community started residing there from August 1990.Fr. George Kottupallil served as its first rector. Fr. Cyriac Kochupurackal succeeded as rector (1991-1994). Others who served as rector are Fr. Francis Alencherry (1994-1995), Fr. Vadakumpadan Paul (1995-2001), Fr. Francis Fernandez (2001-2003), Fr. Edmund Gomes (2003-2006),Fr. Roy Anthony Parackal(2006-2010) Fr. Jose Vettath (2010-2011) Fr. Denis Lalfela (2011-13) Fr. James Poonthuruthil (2013-2017; 2013-2014 as In-Charge and 2014-2017 as rector).

When the M.Th course was started at SHTC, the first few batches of students resided at SHTC together with the B.Th. students. It proved to be inconvenient. After exploring several possibilities, the Academic Council of SHTC, together with the House Council, requested permission to construct a new house. The purpose of the proposed house was to accommodate the professors and the MTh. students of SHTC, and others who would come to participate in other academic programmes conducted at the College.

Till 1993, besides the Salesian students there were several diocesan and other religious priests residing in the house. Since August 1993, the Salesian Brothers and the lay men attending the one year Integrated Training for Laity and Religious (ITLR), conducted at SHTC, were also residing in the community. From 1996 the ITLR lay students were shifted to the Hostel building of SHTC. With the commencement of 2-year Diploma Course in Theology (DCT) for Brothers in 2002, Mathias Institute became also residence for them. The Institute has accommodation facility for 25.

In addition to their normal academic activities at SHTC, the staff members of Mathias render services elsewhere such as giving conferences; classes and retreats as and when requested and is feasible.

Since 2013 Mathias Institute serves as the Provincial House of INS Shillong. This comes after the acceptance of the Rector Major to the proposal for the change of the location and name of the Province. In September 2013, with due authorization from Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez (Rector Major), the Province Offices were transferred to Shillong. Some essential adjustments and renovation were done to serve as the Provincial House. Fr. Poonthuruthil James serves as the Rector of the Community since 2013. The Community serves as the Provincial House besides continuing with its original ministry as the residence for MTh students. The construction of the Provincial House Annex began on 27th February 2016.

Offices and activities of the various Provincial commissions, Bosco world, Chaplaincy, Pastoral ministry. Hostel Accommodation for the MTh. Students who are studying at SHTC.
