West Khasi Hills Salesians honour missionaries for all round development


Shillong 30th January: The Salesian of West Khasi Hills region of the Province of St. John Paul II, Shillong commemorate the centenary of the arrival of the First Salesian Missionaries to the North East India by erecting and blessing the bust of the five Salesians who pioneered various centres in the West Khasi Hills region. The solemn blessing was done by Fr Paul O Lyngkot the Provincial in the presence of Fr Marius Thongnibah – Parish Priest of Pyndengrei, Fr AL Jose, Fr Anthony Kharkongor, Fr Roland Kharkrang, Fr Sebastian Tirkey, Fr John Sohshang, Fr Pyndeilang, Fr Richard, Br Quirinus and more than two hundred youngsters who came for the Centenary Youth convention organized by the Salesian Youth Movement of West Khasi Hills region on the 29th January 2022.

    In his speech, the Provincial lauded the five pioneers of West Khasi Hills – Fr Ruggero Tonezuzzo, Fr Giovanni Premoli, Fr George Desidei Vanni, Fr Manuel Albizuri and Fr Philip Giraudo for their selfless service to bring development in the region. Earlier, Father Roland Kharkrang in his speech and animation for the youth narrated a short history of the growth of the Salesian ministry in the region. Father AL Jose then took sessions on Salesain Spirituality for the youth. Father Anthony Kharkongor and the SYM team of the province also animated the youth on Salesian Youth Spirituality.

    The solemn function concluded on the 30th January 2022 with the solemn Eucharistic celebration in honour of St. John Bosco celebrated by Fr James Thyrniang – the Provincial Economer, concelebrated by six other salesian priests of the region.
    It is with pride and gratitude to Don Bosco, that the seed started a hundred years ago, now it has grown. Thanks to the missionaries who sowed the seed, now the tree of Education, social upliftment and development has grown in the region. Long live Don Bosco!
