Shillong February-March: A week-long sporting activities were held at Don Bosco School Herma from 16th - 23rd February 2022 in the school premises. A week filled with fervour and excitement experienced amidst thrills, shrills and cheers. The field was decorated with flags, festoons and buntings. The sports week began with the division of groups under Seniors, Inters and Juniors both for boys and girls. Thereafter the teachers were entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of each group for the smooth conducting of the sporting activities. Mr. Sajal Debbarma and Mr. Bhajanlal Debbarma were appointed as sports secretaries by Principal, Fr. Babu Stephen SDB. Each student was allowed to take part in any three events only which are their strength as well as the game that they like and it was strictly followed up by the sports secretaries and other teachers’ in-charge of the various groups. Events like Races, Jumps, Throws, Bicycle race, Sack race, Spoon and marble race, Three legged race, Obstacle race, were organized for individuals and relay race, football, volleyball, tug-of-war were conducted as group events. The hall-mark of the sports week was the maximum participation from all the groups under various categories.
The most important event of this week-long sports meet was the first ever Marathon Race organized by the school for the students. It was highly appreciated and applauded by everyone including the parents of our school. The students were given two different routes to run according to their category and it was conducted with excellent planning and with utmost care. In twenty minutes time, the seniors completed the race by covering a distance of 7 kms. At the end of the Marathon race all the students were provided with snacks, tea, and eggs while the teachers were given light breakfast for their hard-work and total commitment shown towards their work assigned to them.
The inaugural function began on Tuesday 22nd of February 2022 in which Rev. Fr. Mathew Payapilly SDB, the Rector of Bosco Home Herma was the chief Guest and Rev. Fr. M.A. Isaac SDB and Rev. Sr. Redina Marwein VSDB were the Guests of Honour. The guests, the pre-novices of Bosco Home, the parents and other invited dignitaries arrived sharp at 9:00 am and they were all welcomed by our Principal, Fr. Babu Stephen SDB.
The Sports Meet opened with the hoisting of the school flag by the Chief Guest which was followed by March-past led by School Captain Master Sunedra Debbarma and Vice-captain Miss. Sania Debbarma and all the four Houses of the school took part in it. During the March-past our Chief Guest, Fr. Mathew, took the salute from the four colourful marching contingents which were followed by the lighting of the Olympic torch by all the winners of the marathon race. Fr. Mathew encouraged every student to take part in the sportin events with sincerity of heart and with a sportsman spirit. He exhorted every to enjoy and relax well. The beautiful and colourful displays by the girls made way for the highly awaited athletic events where competitiveness among the students soared through the roof. Races for different distances, three-legged race, high and long jumps, hammer, javelin and shot-put throws were held on the inaugural day.
The concluding function of the sports meet was held on Wednesday 23rd of February 2022 in which Fr. K.K. Joseph SDB, the former principal of Don Bosco School Herma was the Chief Guest. On his arrival, he was welcomed by Principal together with other invited guests for the day. The events of the day began with the march-past by all four marching contingents and the Chief Guest took the salute from the contingents which were followed by the drill displays by girls. Fr. K.K. Joseph, in his message to the students, exhorted everyone to excel in their sporting events with sportsman spirit and with so much of enthusiasm. The final day saw the stiff-neck competition among the four groups for various group events like, tug-of –war, relay race, tunnel ball, obstacle race, 400mts race and so on… it was very trilling and exciting to see the boys and girls yelling to the top of their voice to extend their support and encourage their respective groups in all the group events. On the concluding day, the march-past of the four houses were judged by three pre-novices appointed Fr. Babu. Green house was declared as the best marching contingent followed by Red House. In the drill display competition once again the Blue House emerged as the Best team who displayed excellent performance as one single team with colourful costumes and synchronized steps. Meanwhile the Chief Guest Fr. K.K. Joseph, and other guests on the dais were called in to give away the medals and trophies to the winners of various sporting events. The highlights of the day were the sporting events conducted for the Parents of our students and they were extremely happy to be part of our annual sports. Their presence and active participation motived their children and made the campus noisy and joyful.
We started with the lower classes and Fr. K.K. did the honour of giving away the medal to the first three winners of the events. The week long sports meet came to an end with the announcement of the champions of the Sports Meet by Fr. Babu Stephen, the principal. Blue House bagged the coveted Champion’s Trophy with 1410 points followed by Green House who lifted the runner’s up trophy with 1210 points. The third prize was taken by the Red house with 1180 points whereas the Yellow house remained at the bottom with 1010 points and they were given the consolation prize. Fr. Mathew, Fr. Isaac and Bro. Wanpher of Bosco Home Herma gave away the trophies to the champion’s teams. The whole event came to its successful completion with the concluding ceremony in which once again Fr. Mathew took the salute and with the help of the sports Secretary Sir Bhajanlal, Fr. Mathew lowered down the school flag from the flagpole and handed it over to the principal and then he declared the Annual Sports Meet of Don Bosco School Herma closed.
