23 Newly Professed, 12 Perpetually Professed and 42 Renewed their vows to celebrate Solemnity of MHC on the Salesian Centenary Year in Shillong.


Shillong 24th May: Every 24th of May is a very special day for the Salesian world wide and in particularly for the Salesians of Shillong Province. This date marked the entry of many confreres to the congregation. This year being the centenary celebration of the arrival of the First batch of Salesians to Shillong - to NE India, 23 novices belonging to Guwahati and Shillong Provinces took their first profession to become Salesians at Don Bosco Sunnyside Novitate Upper Shillong. Their vows was received Shillong Salesian Provincial Father Paul O Lyngkot and he was assisted by Father Joseph Teron - the vice provincial of Guwahati Province and the Father VT Jose the novice master. As many as 30 priests, few brothers, aspirants and faithful took part as the novices who were accompanied by their parents made their first step to Salesian religious life at 7:00am. The service which lasted for two hours was also streamed live on YouTube Channel of the Don Bosco Media Network and on local Television channel No 279.

    Earlier at 6:30am, as many as 42 brothers who were in temporary vows renewed their profession at Out Reach Centre, Bellefonte. Father John Zosiama the vice provincial of the province received their vows.

    The solemnity of the day came to a close as 12 Salesian clerics belonging to Shillong and Guwahati Provinces took their final step to becoming Salesian for ever. This happened during the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Father Paul O Lyngkot, the Provincial concelebrated by a number of other Salesian Priests. Father Joseph Teron the Vice Provincial of Guwahati Province assisted the Provincial to receive their vows of perpetual commitment. In his homily the Provincial spoke about the ‘obedience’ of Mary urging them to be like her. Through the litany of Saints and the Prayer of Blessing, where the entire assembly uniting with the heavenly members invoked God for the fullness of His Spirit to strengthen them in their holy resolve. They made their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience before the public, in the hands of Father Paul O Lyngkot the provincial superior of Shillong province who accepted them in the name of the Church and the congregation. As a sign of their total sharing in the life of Christ each cleric received the Salesian Cross from the Provincial after which he welcomed them as full pledged members of the family. This solemn celebration was witnessed by their parents, dear ones, and others on Local Cable television.

    The entire celebration marked and witnessed the beauty of religious life and the joy of dedicating one’s life to the Lord and to the Church in the Don Bosco’s way.
