Sonapahar Parish marked the 100th Marian Procession at Umdein


Shillong 22nd May: On the occasion of the 100th Marian Procession Anniversary and to celebrate the 100 years of the arrival of the Salesian missionaries to North East India, Sonapahar Parish today commemorated the event by having Marian Procession at Umdein Village. Thousands of faithful from the various villages of the Parish took part as Father James Thyrniang the Provincial Economer celebrated the Holy Mass and led the Procession. Father Sebastian Tirkey the Parish Priest concelebrated the Holy Mass with the Provincial Economer.

    During the Liturgy of the Word, the priest presider shared the Word of God on the importance of Listening to Jesus like Mary did and thus she became a blessing to the world. He reminded the gathering that the eleven Salesian Missionaries too listened to and obeyed their superiors and came to North East and they brought so much blessings to the people through their missionary zeal in evangelization and education. ‘We need to constantly listen to God’ he urged the faithful. He also narrated how the first Marian Procession was held at Laitumkhrah 100 years ago as he thanked the pioneer missionaries for inculcating this devotion to the faithful.

    The Parish Priest Father Sebastian while proposing the vote of thanks lauded the faithful of Umdein Village for organizing the Procession with much devotion and solemnity. The lively Marian Procession concluded with the faithful singing and chanting the ‘Ave Maria’ as they departed home.
