CELEBRATING ST. DON BOSCO’S BIRTHDAY WITH MONTH-LONG INTER SCHOOL SPORTS TOURNAMENT AT ST. ANTHONY’S HR SEC SCHOOL SHILLONG


16th August 2025, Shillong: To mark the birthday of St. Don Bosco, a grand celebration was held at the Don Bosco Mini Stadium of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong. The highlight of the celebration was the Inter School Basketball and Inter School Football Tournament, which was conducted over the span of one month, witnessing enthusiastic participation from several prestigious schools in the region.

    INTER SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2025

    The Inter School Basketball Tournament 2025 came to an exciting conclusion on the 15th of August 2025. The tournament saw intense competition across various age categories.

    In the final match of the Under-14 Girls category, Pine Mount Higher Secondary School went head-to-head against St Mary's Higher Secondary School. It was a thrilling encounter where St Mary's Higher Secondary School emerged victorious, securing the title with 33 points, while Pine Mount finished close behind with 27 points.

    In the Under-14 Boys category, St Anthony's Higher Secondary School showcased outstanding skill and coordination as they beat Savio Juniorate Higher Secondary School, Mawlai. St Anthony’s triumphed with 62 points while Savio Juniorate concluded with 33 points.

    The Under-16 Girls category saw a reversal of fortunes as Pine Mount Higher Secondary School defeated St Mary's Higher Secondary School in a spirited contest. Pine Mount displayed superior strategy and athleticism to win by a significant margin, scoring 52 points to St Mary's 32 points.

    In the Under-16 Boys category, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School clashed with St Edmund’s Higher Secondary School. The game was high on energy and competitive spirit. St Anthony’s secured a solid victory, scoring 77 points, while St Edmund’s followed closely behind with 71 points.

    The Girls category for 16 years and above witnessed an electrifying final between St Mary's Higher Secondary School and St Anthony's Higher Secondary School. The match kept spectators on the edge of their seats. St Mary's ultimately claimed the title with a score of 60 points, narrowly defeating St Anthony’s, who scored 54 points.

    In the Boys category for 16 years and above, Shillong College faced off against Sacred Heart Boys. The match was a nail-biter till the last minute, with Shillong College narrowly emerging victorious by scoring 61 points against Sacred Heart’s 60 points.

    The tournament was graced by the presence of Mylliem MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh as the chief guest. Also present were Joel Marbaniang, President of the Meghalaya Basketball Association, Secretary Wanlambok Iawphniaw, and Executive Member James, who encouraged and applauded the efforts and talents of all the young athletes.

    INTER SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2025

    On the other hand, the Inter School Football Tournament concluded on 16th August 2025 and saw commendable performances from all participating teams.

    The opening Under-14 match was contested between Umpohliew Jingtip Higher Secondary School, Nongbsap, and OM Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School, Mawlai. The match was full of excitement and energy, ending in a 1-1 draw. OM Roy Memorial School scored the first goal for Nongbsap School through a penalty kick.

    In the Under-16 category, Savio Juniorate played against OM Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School, Mawlai. OM Roy Memorial showcased excellent teamwork and dominated the match, defeating Savio Juniorate with a clean 2-0 score.

    The Under-18 match was a gripping encounter between St Anthony's Higher Secondary School and OM Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School, Mawlai. The match ended in a draw during regular time, but in the penalty shootout, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School held their nerve and clinched the title, adding another feather to their cap.

    The football tournament concluded with an award distribution ceremony, where Aiban Dohling—one of the football legends who brought the Subroto Cup to Shillong in 1978 when St Anthony’s became champions—was present to distribute awards and inspire the young footballers with his presence.

    The month-long Inter School Basketball and Football Tournaments held at St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, in celebration of the birthday of St. Don Bosco, brought together students from various schools in a spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and friendly competition. The event not only highlighted the immense sporting talent among the youth of Meghalaya but also emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities in holistic education. The presence of eminent personalities and the enthusiastic participation of the students made the event a grand success and a memorable celebration of St. Don Bosco’s legacy.
