History

Situated in the West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, Rangblang is at a distance of 100 kms from Shillong and falls in the Nongstoin Diocese. The Catholic population is about 7,250 in over 900 families spread over 55 villages. The parish is permanently entrusted to the Salesians as per the agreement signed between Archbishop Hubert D’Rosario and the Salesian Provincial, Fr. Mathai Kochuparampil, on 1st July 1983.

The parish of Rangblang was established in 1980 from the existing parish of Nongstoin.  The specific purpose of the new parish was to carry out further evangelization work and education among the people of the area. Fr. Philip Giraudo was appointed as the first parish priest. Hostels were built in the centre for both boys and girls. Fr. Leonard Kharkongor succeeded as the parish priest in 1989 after the demise of Fr. Philip. The emphasis on education continued and today the parish has 48 primary schools and two Middle English schools and one High school. A new church was constructed and blessed in March 1998. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians help in the running of the school in the centre, a dispensary and a hostel for girls.
